By: Nez Savala

The inaugural St. Louis High School Musical Theatre Awards recently were presented at the Fabulous Fox Theatre with local performers among the winners.

Francis Howell Central won for Outstanding Orchestra with its production of “Once Upon A Mattress.” Anna Meyer of Fort Zumwalt North received a Special Recognition Award for her role as the fiddler in “Fiddler on the Roof.”

The awards are a partnership between the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation, The Muny and The Fabulous Fox Theatre. In its inaugural year, the program registered 26 schools to have productions adjudicated. More than 250 high school students performed on the Fox stage at the May 28 ceremony, which was hosted by Ken Page and directed by Tony Parisi.

Winners for Outstanding Actress and Outstanding Actor will compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmy Awards, on June 26 in New York City.
